||Effects of Pressure on the Structure and Properties of Metallic Glasses Examined by Computer Simulation

This talk will describe the results of recent computer simulation studies to investigate the effect of applied pressure on the structure and properties of model metallic glass systems. A variety of model glasses with differing compositions and cooling rates are exposed to applied hydrostatic pressures using classical and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. We examine the effect of pressure on the atomic-level structure, elastic constants as well as the electronic and vibrational properties. Our interpretation of the pressure effect is correlated with the heterogeneous nature of structure and deformation of metallic glasses at the atomic scale. Our computer simulations complement existing experimental observations and provide a rich picture of the effects that pressure can have on the structure and properties of metallic glasses.
