Presentation Title High Ductility in Bulk Polycrystalline Tungsten Produced by Equal Channel Angular Extrusion

Abstract Scope Polycrystalline tungsten of commercial purity was processed by equal channel angular extrusion at low homologous temperatures. A total strain in excess of 4 was imparted via this method, resulting in a bulk material with highly elongated and refined microstructure, {110} texture along the extrusion direction, flexural modulus of ~3GPa, and ductility of 17-23% total elongation. Microstructure was characterized via optical and electron microscopy revealing a highly elongated lamella type structure composed of submicron sized subgrains. Mechanical behavior was evaluated through 3-point bend testing at ambient as well as elevated temperatures, permitting characterization of temperature effects on ductility, strength and fracture energy, as well as the ductile-to-brittle transition behavior. Through this investigation it was determined that the source of ductility in this highly worked tungsten is due to inhibition of crack formation and propagation by the elongated microstructure and the favorable {110} texture permitting dislocation mobility under high stress conditions.
