Presentation Title On the Design and Selection of Nb In Situ Composites

Abstract Scope Nb in-situ composites have the potential to replace Ni-based superalloys in high temperature aero-engine applications. The key phases in these alloys are the bcc Nb solid solution and the tetragonal Nb5Si3 silicide but also other intermetallics such as hexagonal C14-NbCr2 Laves and cubic A15-Nb3X phases can be present in the microstructures. The presentation will show how recent advances in understanding the alloying behaviour of the aforementioned phases have made it possible to design and select new in-situ composites with balance of properties that can meet property goals. The presentation will describe the new alloy design methodology NICE (Niobium Intermetallic Composite Elaboration), and demonstrate its use to design new in-situ composites. Examples of designed composites will be given and their creep and oxidation properties will be compared with the industry set property goals for ultra-high temperature alloys with capabilities beyond those of Ni based superalloys.
