||Ion Irradiation Effects on the Structure and Thermal Properties of Zirconium Diboride

Zirconium diboride, an Ultra High Temperature Ceramic (UHTC),has been used as a burnable poison coating for oxide nuclear fuel for the past decade yet relatively little is known about the behavior of this material under neutron and fission product irradiation. We have performed 5 and 10 MeV Au ion beam irradiations at the Ion Beam Materials Laboratory (IBML) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with the goal of identifying the basic radiation effects in polycrystalline zirconium diboride. Post irradiation characterization included: structural characterization with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffractometry (GIXRD); chemical changes with X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS); and thermal property changes with frequency domain Photothermal Radiometry (PTR). Among other effects, anisotropic strain, formation dislocation networks, denuded zones and thermal diffusivity shifts will be discussed.
