Abstract Scope |
A new high-strength ultra-light material that combines the advantages of metal matrix composites with metallic foams is introduced. In situ aluminum metal matrix composite is synthesis and processed via novel technique, along with structural engineering via two different semisolid processing. Direct metal oxidation (DIMOX) and semisolid (Rheocasting) and Thixocasting processing are applied for the development of structural composite foam. Nontraditional technique for foam processing is introduced. Alloying elements addition as well as alloy segregation are conducted. Metal matrix composite reinforced with either whiskers of alumina or nano-intermetallic fibers, and boron-based carbon fibers is established. Microstructural analysis and mechanical analysis are conducted. Foaming agent is introduced with the swirl kinetic of DIMOX processing for structural foam composite. Rheocasting has dominant effects on the control of porosity size and shape for mechanical properties. Thixocasting is dominant in controlling surface coating. |
