||Enhanced Ductility with Significant Increase in Strength of As-Cast CNTs/AZ91D Nanocomposites

The CNTs/AZ91D nanocomposite fabricated by permanent gravity casting assisted with ultrasonic processing was subject to as-cast (F), solid solution (T4) and aging (T6) treatment in sequence. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites at different state were tested. The results showed that the ductility and the tensile strength of the nanocomposites after T4 treatment were increased by 500 percent and 100 percent compared with the as-cast properties, which were 10.6 percent and 260MPa respectively. After T6 treatment, the tensile strength and especially the yield strength of the nanocomposites was increased by 100 and 75 percent to 265MPa and 140MPa respectively, while its ductility was still 3.5 times as high as the as-cast ductility. The microstructure characterization indicated that CNTs can strengthen and toughen the composite through refining the matrix grain and the beta-Mg17Al12 precipitated during the aging treatment and making its distribution more even.
