Abstract Scope The energy landscape of a grain boundary comprises a large number of anisotropies; and as a result, even the simplest atomistic events (such as diffusional hops) are influenced by the far-field stress state in complex ways. In this work we explore the stress dependence of transition states in the sigma-5 boundary in EAM copper, for which we find 26 unique kinetic transitions from its ground state. We evaluate the activation volumes for such events with a focus on grain boundary diffusion. Whereas a typical continuum approximation is to neglect shear terms and use a scalar activation volume to capture the effect of pressure on diffusion, we find that in general a full activation volume tensor is not only needed for grain boundary diffusion, but that the role of shear is dominant to the hydrostatic contribution.
