Abstract Scope |
To understand the complex deformation mechanisms of titanium alloys at the onset of plasticity, it is necessary to capture the 3D evolving microstructure and stress state at the microscale. The combination of in situ near-field and far-field high energy X-ray diffraction microscopy (HEDM) provides the needed spatial and temporal resolution. Near-field data produces the 3D spatially-resolved orientation maps, while far-field data enables the extraction of both grain-scale stress tensors and the intragranular orientations for each grain in a 1 mm3 volume of a polycrystal (~1000 grains) during the continuous loading of an alloy. Leveraging recent advances in both modalties of HEDM and complementary electron microscopy data, we will discuss the fundamental relationships between evolving slip systems, orientations, and stress states for a series of grains in Ti-7Al under uniaxial tension. |
