||Modeling Inclusions with Surface Stresses in the Phase Field Framework

For Solid-gas systems, such gas bubbles in ceramic or metallic nuclear fuel, and solid-solid systems, such as precipitates, a quantity independent from the interfacial free energy, the surface stress must be considered. First described by Gibbs the surface stress affects the equilibrium pressure in gas bubbles, pressure discontinuities across interfaces, and the microstructure evolution under stress gradients. We present a linearized formulation for surface stresses in the phase field and continuum mechanics modules of the open source MOOSE finite element framework and demonstrate it on a variety of inclusion problems.
