Bauxite residue produced during the Bayer process continues to be a challenge for the alumina refineries in terms of management. This work is trying to address the above and presents new research findings on sub-processes that aspire to become the elements of a technologically realistic, financially viable, overall process. These processes are grouped over three domains, that of base metal (Fe, Al) recovery, rare earth metal (predominantly Sc) recovery and that of novel Fe-rich binders. The presented processes can operate independently or in a sequential, complementary flow sheet and can deliver market-ready final products.
