In the case of brazing in Ti-based alloys, low melting temperature of the brazing filler metal is very important due to the α-β phase transformation. The Zr-Ti-based metallic glasses have attracted much attention as a way to obtain the filler metal for brazing of Ti-based alloys in a ribbon form using melt spinning process. Metallic glass filler is excellent for uniformity of microstructure due to atomic structure of an amorphous phase and their melting temperature is generally lower than that of conventional casting materials.
In this study we report the development of Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni metallic glass fillers produced by melt spinning process for brazing of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties of brazing joint, The microstructure of the brazed joint was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Electron Probe Micro-Analysis (EPMA). Tensile tests were conducted at room temperature and at a strain rate of 1x10-4S-1.
