Abstract Scope Refractory complex concentrated alloys (RCCAs) are an emerging class of materials that have displayed significant potential for use in extreme, high temperature environments. These alloys consist of high concentrations of common refractory metals mixed with a variety of other 3d transition metals. While limited work has explored this composition space, uncoated RCCAs have displayed remarkable levels of oxidation resistance compared to most uncoated commercial refractory alloys. However, the active oxidation mechanisms driving these unique behaviors are not well understood. This study broadens the understanding of RCCA oxidation mechanisms through systematic evaluation of several Nb-containing RCCAs, which exhibit vastly different oxidation behaviors. In most cases, the prime mechanism was internal oxidation, where a non-continuous mixture of simple and complex oxides was observed after prolonged oxidation times. Under this mindset, novel design strategies for promoting increased oxidation resistance in both RCCAs and dilute refractory alloys based on sluggish complex oxides are proposed.
