||Direct Performance Simulation Based on the Microstructure of SOFC Electrodes: A Phase Field Approach

A phase field model is developed to simulate the performance of SOFC electrodes. By solving the conduction equations on both the electrolyte and electrode phases incorporating the three-dimensional microstructure and reaction front at triple phase boundaries, the current-voltage relation of an electrode is directly simulated. By further coupling it to our recently developed coarsening model, we are able to investigate the effect of initial microstructure on the performance degradation of both Ni-YSZ anode and LSM-YSZ cathode. The implication of the results on designing the optimal initial microstructure of SOFC electrode is discussed.
