In order to design the road defect scanning system, several different types of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, such as infrared (IR) thermography, vision system with line laser scanning, ground penetration radar (GPR) technique, etc., were employed. The multiple applications of NDE techniques ensure the higher reliability of defect control. In this investigation, various types of sensing techniques were used to detect abnormal conditions of road surface. IR thermography was employed to monitor the surface or subsurface of road in terms of infrared transmission. A vision camera with line laser scanning was used to obtain the road surface profile. The GPR sensing system was used to detect voids inside the road. In this paper, multiple application of various types of NDE technique was employed to design the road scanning system, and the results will be introduced.
