Directed energy deposition of compositionally graded combinations of M300 and 316L steels are explored for impact applications requiring a significant change in material hardness. The deposition system utilized here is integrated in a multi-axis machining center enabling geometries and surface finishes not available to additive processes alone. Hybrid manufacturing is demonstrated of structures comprised of monolithic and functionally graded materials (FGMs). Results from parameter development of deposited monolithic steels are contrasted with graded steels. An iterative FGM design approach is used combining rapid fabrication, computational analysis, and testing.
