||O-25: High Strain Rate Deformation of Automobile Grade Steels

The aim of this investigation is to understand the material behaviour of automobile grade steels when deformed at high strain rates. Four different ferritic steels with varying strengthening mechanisms were selected for this study and they were deformed in tensile at strain rates of 0.001 to 800 /s. Apart from variation in strength and ductility, these materials also show a change in their strain hardening rates and strain rate sensitivity with strain rate. The obtained behaviour has been attempted to explain by observing their microstructure and sub-structure after deformation. It has been found that strain rate also plays a major role in deciding the fracture properties of the materials where, the void size distribution varied with the strain rate. The existence of dynamic recovery and recrystallization were investigated in the materials using TEM as well as EBSD. The results showed a change in the recrystallization behaviour with strain rate.
