Increased penetration of renewables and other distributed energy resources such as solid oxide fuel cells and grid scale energy storage will require major changes in the transmission and distribution system. Multiport, modular DC-DC converter technology is currently under development to allow for multi-directional power flow while satisfying necessary interoperability requirements. A key enabling technology for this converter topology is a multi-winding high frequency transformer integrated with dual-active bridge based power conversion approaches. This presentation will overview recent developments spanning materials development, transformer design and demonstration, and prototype converter demonstrations. An overview will also be presented of related on-going project work focused on development of enabling magnetic materials and component concepts, technologies, and concepts.
