Presentation Title Effect of Oxide Coating on the Fusion Welding of Molybdenum Tubing

Abstract Scope Two different alloys of molybdenum tubing, 3.2mm in diameter, were closed by gas tungsten arc welding in argon at one atmosphere pressure. There was a noticeable difference between the welds of pure molybdenum and a molybdenum 0.3 wt % lanthia alloy. To determine if lanthia doping could improve the welding of the pure molybdenum, this pure alloy was then welded with a lanthia coating as a flux. Other coatings attempted were yttria, magnesia, and carbon black. The results were mixed. Comparison to calculations from bulk thermodynamics and known surface tension phenomena led to the conclusion that successful welding is likely due to surface tension effects as opposed to any gettering effects.
