Presentation Title Characterization of Internal Defects and Their Effect on Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel 304L Components Fabricated through Laser-based Directed Energy Deposition

Abstract Scope This presentation will detail the connections among processing parameters, microstructure, and mechanical properties in stainless steel 304L builds fabricated using Additive Manufacturing (AM). In particular, this work looks at the effect of internal defects in the form of un-melted particles, on the mechanical properties of AM-fabricated samples. Components were fabricated using laser-based powder-based directed energy deposition using two different laser powers. To study anisotropic uniaxial tension behavior, samples were extracted in different orientations with respect to the build direction. Digital image correlation was used to compute surface strain fields during mechanical testing. X-ray computed tomography was used to visualize internal inclusions and pores, and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) was used to identify the chemistry of the inclusions.
