The characteristics and mechanisms of enhanced electrochemical properties for a Mg-Ni alloy produced by mechanical alloying were investigated by electrochemical measurements. Electrochemical hydrogen storage properties were characterised by cyclic charge–discharge experiment, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization methods. The phase composition and microstructure of Mg-Ni alloy were detected by XRD and SEM. XRD showed that the alloys exhibit dominatingly amorphous structures for samples milled for 20 h. In this work, the impedance spectra of the Mg-Ni alloys were measured at different depths of discharge (DODs). The observed spectra were ﬁt well with the equivalent circuit model. We further observed that the rate-determining step changed from charge-transfer to hydrogen diffusion with proceeding of discharge according to the ﬁtting analyses of spectra. The best performance was obtained with Mg50Ni50 with the discharge capacity value of 525 mAhg-1.
