||Functionalization of Thermoset Composite Surfaces for Welding Technologies

Composites – the combination of high performance fibers and polymer matrices – are offering excellent lightweight construction for different end-use areas like aircraft, automotive, wind energy applications. The thermoset matrix systems are mainly used in those applications due to their superior fatigue/compression characteristics. Due to the chemical structure of those systems, they are – after chemical curing – showing a three dimensional network which cannot be welded again.
In highly loaded structures, the combination of different structure elements with those composites can only be achieved by riveting or bonding. By preparation of those thermoset composites with a functional thermoplastic surface, the welding technology can be applied very successful in order to avoid riveting or bonding. It can be shown that the welding technology with those functional surfaces will lead to excellent shear and crack resistance properties, making this technology applicable for welding of big structures.
