The initiation in the gigacycle regime can be described in terms of a local micro structurally irreversible portion of the cumulative cyclic plastic strain. When crack initiation appears from an inclusion, a cyclic plastic zone around the crack occurs leading high thermal dissipation. The theoritical number of cycles of the fish eye propagation is about 105 cycles. Using the heating dissipation, it was confirmed that the initiation of the fish eye is the key problem. The fractographic observations confirmed that the fish eye propagation is very fast. The initaition of the fish eye is related to ODA, white area or butterfly wings. In plane stress state, a PSB formation threshold existe in iron loaded in the gigacycle regime. It does not mean fatigue limit. The fish eye initiation is related to shear bands, dislocation cells, twinning and phase transformation. |
