Abstract Scope |
The SPT (small punch test) is a method for obtaining the yield strength and the ultimate tensile strength of a certain material. The uniqueness of this method is the use of a miniature specimen, enabling to produce a relatively large amount of data from a small amount of material available for testing. The SPT is popular in the nuclear field. Using a miniature specimen of an Irradiated material facilitates the task by reducing radiation. In this paper, the design process of a new SPT system, which perform both shear and bending tests on miniature samples is described. The different design considerations in the developing process are presented. The process of examining the different mechanisms and deciding on the most suitable one, taking into account different engineering considerations is detailed in the paper. Last, a few examples of force/displacement curves, which were measured using the new SPT system design are presented. |
