The intimate link between process parameters and resultant microstructure in additively manufactured components has received considerable attention. In order to build a comprehensive model of these relationships, a fundamental understanding of processing-microstructure relationships at the scale of melt pool solidification events is required. Characterization of individual melt pools designed to produce morphologically distinct microstructures was performed using the TriBeam tomography system to collect structural and crystallographic information in three-dimensions. In conjunction with two-dimensional characterization, the role of beam power and pulse duration on observed melt pool shapes will be discussed. The extent of structural transitions in and around particular melt pools as dictated by the underlying microstructure will also be presented.
