Symposium Coupling Advanced Characterization and Modeling Tools for Understanding Fundamental Phase Transformation Mechanisms: An MPMD Symposium in Honor of Hamish Fraser
Presentation Title The Need for Advanced Techniques to Couple Multiscale Physics Based Structural Models
Author(s) Jaimie Tiley
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Jaimie Tiley
Abstract Scope Recent emphasis on game-changing technologies, including hypersonics and unmanned vehicles, has increased the need to couple physics based models at multiple length scales. Although the use of advanced numerical approaches have revolutionized the design process, many of the material constants needed by peridynamic and crystal plasticity finite element models are often averaged over microstructures or provided by modeled material systems. Although determination of the exact microstructure and chemical parameters are critical to the underlying mechanisms that drive mechanical behavior, measuring the properties has proven difficult. This talk describes several research activities that are modeling basic mechanisms across multiple length scales, and describes several of the features needed for continued model development. This includes an overview of research directions within the Multiscale Structural Mechanics and Prognosis Portfolio within the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.
