Recent developments have extended the mechanical performance capability of particle reinforced aluminium alloys through refinement of the ceramic reinforcement sizes and the matrix substructures. This paper will summarise mechanical and physical properties of these nano-scale reinforced materials. Recent developments in this field will be discussed including those that have extended the size, availability and complexity of components that can be manufactured from these materials. The paper will also establish the importance of practical net shape fabrication and finishing techniques to allow the manufacture of components.
