||Isothermal Transformation Kinetics of γ phase from α+γ' Phase Mixture in U-10wt.%Mo Alloys

Phase transformations in U-10wt.%Mo (U10Mo) alloys are being examined to help develop low-enriched metallic fuel system for advanced research and test reactors. In this study, isothermal transformation kinetics of γ phase from an α+γ' phase mixture were examined at 570, 580 and 590°C. Arc-melted U10Mo alloy specimens were first homogenized at 800°C for 96 hours, and then fully decomposed into equilibrium α+γ' phase mixture by heat treating at 500°C for 720 hours. Isothermal transformations, (α+γ' -> γ) were examined after heat treatment at 570, 580 and 590°C as a function of time by using quantitative X-ray diffraction. Microstructural analyses were also carried out by using electron microscopy to document transformation characteristics including dissolution, nucleation and growth. An analytical model combining precipitate dissolution and Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kologoromov (JMAK) kinetics was employed to assimilate the experimental observations.
