||On the Structural Origin of Strength and Plasticity of Metallic Glasses

Deformation mechanism of metallic glasses is different from that of crystalline materials due to their long-range disordering atomic structure. Their deformation was carried by local shearing instead of dislocation, which makes it difficult to establish their structure-property relationship. This talk attempts to extract the structural origin of strength/modulus and plasticity from characterization of local and global structural information and their evolution during deformation. It was found strength and modulus was mainly contributed from the global structural characteristics while plastic deformation connected with the local fluctuation. The current work may help for understanding structure-property relationship in metallic glasses.
