Presentation Title Surface Segregation in SOFC Cathode Materials

Abstract Scope Surface segregation has been studied in two well-known cathode materials used in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs); (La0.8Sr0.2)0.95MnO3 (LSM) and LaxSr1-xCo0.2Fe0.8O3-δ (LSCF). Epitaxial thin films of these materials were deposited on lattice-matched substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Compositional changes on the surface of these thin films were measured using total reflection x-ray fluorescence (TXRF) technique in real time at 800C. Ex-situ electronic structure measurements were carried on the post-annealed samples using hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES). Selected samples were also characterized in cross-section by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and composition profiles were analyzed using energy-dispersed x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The thermodynamics and kinetics of the segregation and phase formation phenomena will be discussed.
