||Interdiffusion and Reaction between Al vs. X (X = Zr, Mo, U) Diffusion Couples

In Materials Management and Minimization Reactor Conversion Program, undesirable interaction between U-10wt.%Mo fuel and Al-alloy cladding needs to be minimized, potentially by application of diffusion barrier. This study aims to examine the functional effectiveness of two candidate diffusion barrier, Zr and Mo, using solid-to-solid diffusion couple experiments between Al vs. Zr or Mo in the temperature range of 425 – 650oC. In addition, effect of Si alloying addition in Al along with Al vs. U interaction are examined to provide a more fundamental understanding with respect to the hot-rolling and HIP for monolithic fuel plates. Phase constituents and concentration profiles are examined using electron microscopy and spectroscopy. Mechanical properties, such as hardness and elastic modulus, of major intermetallic phases developed within diffusion couples are determined using nanoindentation. Results are presented in terms diffusion kinetics and thermo-mechanical behavior, and discussed with respect to fuel plate processing and irradiation behavior.
