Extensive investigations of TiAl alloys have enabled their commercial implementation in the aerospace and automobile industries. Next generation alloys with major (group VB and VIB) and minor (group IIIA and IVA) elemental additions have been developed to achieve a superior balance of mechanical and environmental properties. The conventional vs non-conventional processing aspects (casting, forging, additive) associated with microstructural variability of different alloy generations, with the room and elevated temperature alloy property response is key to understanding the underlying mechanisms. These themes will be discussed in this paper. Hamish’s contribution in the field of TiAl intermetallics will also be highlighted.
