||Porous Bulk Metallic Glasses for Application as Biomedical Materials

Porous bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) combine the advantages of porous metallic materials and metallic glasses. They are receiving increasing attention. Ti-based BMGs have the attractive potential for functional applications such as biomedical materials due to their high corrosion resistance, excellent mechanical properties and good biocompatibility. In the present study, we developed Ni- and Be-free porous Ti-based BMGs with large size. The pores were homogeneously distributed in the whole samples. The porosity of the samples can be controlled. The porous BMGs exhibited high strength, low Young’s modulus, good corrosion resistance. In vivo evaluation had also been carried out by implantation the glassy bars in the bone of rats. The porous Ti-based glassy bars exhibited excellent biocompatibility with bone tissue. It also showed nice osteoconductivity, and no metal ion diffusion was detected up to three months after operation.
