Abstract Scope Multi-material structures have wide range of applications and offer unique solutions to many engineering structures. Bimetallic structures of Inconel 718 and Ti6Al4V alloys were processed using Laser Engineering Net Shaping (LENS™). During LENS™ processing, Inconel 718 and Ti6Al4V alloys formed brittle intermetallics at the interface and caused extensive delamination and de-bonding due to both induced thermal stresses and brittle intermetallics. For a successful build, it required a third material or an intermediate layer to bond the two immiscible materials. The use of a compositional bond layer (CBL), which is a mixture of both powders with other additives along with optimized LENS™ processing parameters were employed to successfully manufacture bimetallic structure of Inconel 718 and Ti6Al4V alloys. CBL improved the bonding strength and lower thermal stresses at the interface. The presentation will include processing and process-property optimization of this bimetallic structure via LENS™.
