We present an investigation of the mechanical response of FCC nanopillars to uniaxial cyclic compression, through extensive two dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics (2D DDD) simulations. We observe typical size effects and avalanches statistics that are common in nanopillar compression, but also a striking average non-linearity of the stress-strain curves during reloading, that appears strongly correlated to the present dislocation density. Analogous non-linearities are typically observed in metallurgy but their origin has been obscure. Here, we show that the non-linear response is explained by the behavior of the average dislocation density during loading.
