Abstract Scope Magnesium is the lightest metal for practical structural applications where high strength-to-weight ratio is a critical engineering requirement. Its potential benefit has prompted many research activities to improve its strength and overcome the thermomechanical process challenges. Synthesis of nanostructured powders followed by consolidation is an avenue for bulk nanostructured Magnesium alloy processing that offers material design flexibilities for incorporating composite reinforcements and multiscale gran structures. Findings from fundamental investigations in Mg alloys solidification and phenomena in consolidated WE43 structures obtained from the cryogenically nanostructured powders are presented. Possible strengthening mechanisms are discussed based on the observations revealed from multitudes of experimental and characterization techniques employed. A nanostructure saturation limit, a role of degassing, and grain stabilities of WE43 are discussed and future research thrusts are recommended for the development of engineered nanostructured Magnesium alloys and composites for dual use applications.
