Abstract Scope The hard X-ray imaging capabilities of modern synchrotron light sources offer an expansive set of tools for characterisation of heterogeneous catalysts. In particular, X-ray ptychography and ptychographic X-ray computed tomography (PXCT) offer a unique combination of large field of view, high spatial resolution, and the opportunity for element specific characterisation through complementary spectroscopic methods. This contribution outlines recent studies of several hierarchically-structured catalyst materials, demonstrating how important features such as porosity, active metal species and structural integrity can be visualised non-invasively. This includes imaging regimes under realistic reaction conditions, in order to provide new insights into catalyst structure-activity relationships and provide a valuable link to modelling and simulation studies. Hard X-ray ptychography and PXCT are demonstrated to provide nm-scale spatial resolutions complementary to, and rapidly converging on, those of electron microscopy.
