| Abstract Scope |
Coal fly-ash containing 40% -50%Al2O3 and 40-50% SiO2 from power plants is an alternative resource for alumina production. The alumina content in the coal fly-ash was extracted using soda-sintering and aluminate solution digesting process in laboratory. The sintering process was investigated using XRD, DTA and SEN-EDS techniques. The analysis showed that NaAlSiO4 was produced when the ratio of fly ash to Na2CO3 was 1:0.4 at 900°C, and the best leaching efficiency for the sintered NaAlSiO4 powders was obtained at the ratio 1:0.6. Removal of a glass-like silica layer on the surface of particles containing Al2O3/SiO2 in the fly ash. The so made sodium aluminate solutions after purification for removing Si and Fe were used to produce Al(OH)3 powders in a seeded precipitation process similar to Bayer’s. This process can be an independent one or part of an ordinary industrial operation in alumina refining plants. |
