||The Influence of Liquid Structure on the Devitrification of Solid Amorphous Al-based Marginal Glass Forming Alloys

Al-rich Al-RE (RE: Sm, Tb) marginal glass forming alloys are known to show an abnormal primary crystallization with densities reaching up to 10^23 - 10^25 m-3. This behavior was correlated to the topological and chemical oriented medium range order (MRO) present in the as-quenched amorphous alloy. We believe that this MRO structure is originated in the molten state at elevated temperatures within the glass formation range. In this respect, the structures of amorphous and liquid phases have been investigated in details using in-situ high energy x-ray diffraction (HEXRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and atom probe tomography (APT) within and in the vicinity of metallic glass formation range. The existence of MRO in liquid and its effects in metallic glass formation has been investigated in details. The research is supported by Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR).
