Presentation Title YP-6: Refinement of Primary and Eutectic Silicon in Hypereutectic Al-Si Alloys with Electromagnetic Stirring

Abstract Scope Electromagnetic stirring has been applied to various molten metals processing owing to their functions of improvement in grain shape and size, uniform distribution of solute elements. This study is focused on the effect of electromagnetic stirring on the solidification of direct chill casting billet in hypereutectic Al-15%Si alloy. In the experiments, non-treated and P-treated Al-Si alloy is continuously cast into 150mm diameter billet and the microstructure and primary silicon was observed with microscopy. Non-treated billet without electromagnetic stirring shows uniform distribution of primary silicon during DC casting. However non-treated billet with electromagnetic stirring shows irregular primary silicon distribution with refined grain size. Finally reduced primary silicon size and uniform distribution was achieved with applying electromagnetic stirring and adding Cu-P modifier. Eutectic silicon shows the change of morphology from fibrous to needle-shape by applying electromagnetic stirring.
