||Alucell: A Unique Suite of Models to Optimize Pot Performances and Design

In order to support the continuous improvement of pot performances and to optimize pot designs, RIO TINTO extensively uses the numerical in-house code “ALUCELL” through its unique suite of models. For 30 years, this code has been developed in partnership with EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne). The initial purpose was to model the MHD stability of the metal-bath interface, by performing a linear stability analysis around a calculated 3D steady state. Today, this code enables: the unsteady modelling of MHD instabilities, the modelling of alumina dissolution and distribution within the pot, and the coupling between thermo-electric balance and MHD flow. This article discloses the main features of these different models and obtained results are presented on the latest cutting edge AP Technology.
