Symposium Application of Solidification Fundamentals to Challenges in Metal Additive Manufacturing

Abstract Scope Additive manufacturing (AM) enables the design of novel alloys by extending the effective solid solubility for certain alloying elements through rapid solidification. This study examines single and double scan tracks on bulk binary Al-Co and Al-Ce (0.5 at%), alloying elements identified using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to be favorable for solid solution strengthening due to their high lattice strain. Rapidly solidified tracks are produced in a ProX-300 SLM machine using laser surface melting in order to understand fundamental solidification phenomena on a track-by-track level. Preliminary results show solid solubility extensions of 50x in Al-Co . The effect of varying laser power, scan speed, and hatch spacing on the resulting microstructure, phases, and texture is determined using SEM, TEM, EDS, and EBSD. A deeper understanding of solid solubility extensions during AM helps current efforts to develop new alloys specific for AM.
