| Abstract Scope |
Isothermal annealing treatments at intermediate test temperatures for times up to and in excess of one year have been conducted on both 5083-H116 and 5456-H116. The effects of such annealing treatments on the hardness, tension, and fatigue crack growth behavior have been determined on 6 mm thick plate. Samples tested in the LT direction exhbited splitting in the short transverse direction under certain isothermal annealing and subsequent mechanical test conditions. The effects of sensitization on the tension and fatigue crack growth in the LT direction for these materials will be presented, followed by preliminary tests conducted in the ST direction in order to probe the reduction in ST properties that evolves in these materials under these conditions. SEM and TEM were utilized to characterize the fracture surfaces and microstructural features exhibited. |
