Symposium Hume-Rothery Award Symposium: Thermodynamics of Materials
Presentation Title Vibrational Entropy and Chemical Configurations: Experimental Quantification and Their Correlation
Author(s) Matthew Steven Lucas
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Matthew Steven Lucas
Abstract Scope This talk, in honor of my graduate advisor Brent Fultz, will have an emphasis on the vibrational entropy and phase stability of binary Fe containing alloys which exhibit chemical order/disorder transitions and/or chemical un-mixing. Methods to measure the phonon density of states such as Nuclear Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering and Inelastic Neutron Scattering will be presented. The combination of these two experiments provides a means to correct for the neutron-weighting problem. The cluster expansion, a technique historically utilized by the computational thermodynamics community, is described as a means of relating the measured phonon densities of states and vibrational entropies to the state of chemical order of the alloy.
