||The Study of Lead Segregation Behavior of the Heterogeneous Nucleation in Steel

Lead in steel has been thought harmful because of segregation at grain boundaries, but there are not obvious affects if lead exists alone.If the problem of segregation is solved , the quality problem of steel containing lead will become much easier . It is therefore most important to investigate the behavior of lead in the process of solidification . In this study,70 steel from a certain steel mill was re-melted at 1823K by Si Mo furnace . And in-situ observation of the behavior of the lead precipitation on cooling in re-melted 70 steel containing MnS inclusions or not was made using a confocal laser scanning microscope . The precipitates were analyzed by SEM-EDX.
As a result the effect of MnS inclusions on the heterogeneous nucleation of lead was made clear . But the segregation was not observed obviously without MnS inclusions.
