||Characterization of the Liquid Phase Sintered Tungsten Heavy Alloys Prepared by an Electrochemically Produced Tungsten Powder

A novel production method for tungsten by an electrochemical process was reported in 2010. The process involved electrochemical reduction of calcium tungstate (CaWO<SUB>4</SUB>) in calcium chloride containing molten salt solutions. Although the process promised remarkable advantages over the traditional method relying on the laboratory scale experiments, the sintering behavior of the powder needs to be characterized properly. This study aimed to investigate the liquid phase sintering of the electrochemically produced tungsten powder. At least ninety weight percent tungsten containing tungsten heavy alloys were prepared using different proportions of cobalt and nickel, and then sintered at 1500 and 1550<SUP>o</SUP>C under continuous flow of hydrogen gas. The results were compared with a control group, produced under the same conditions using a commercially available tungsten powder. Hardness and density measurements, X-ray diffraction and fluorescence analyses and scanning electron microscopy were used in the characterization of the raw materials and sintered bodies.
