||Investigation of Mechanical Properties of Cu-MWCNT Nanocomposites Synthesized by Wet Chemical Reduction Route

We report a green and facile fabrication of CNT reinforced copper matrix nanocomposites via wet chemical reduction route with enhanced mechanical properties. Simultaneous morphology control and Cu/CNT ratio tuning provided by this route resulted in uniform distribution of CNTs in Cu matrix. The CNTs were first decorated with Cu nanoparticles and subsequently incorporated into Cu matrix using simple ultrasonication followed by chemical reduction. Cu-CNT nanocomposite powder of various ratios were produced and then subjected to spark-plasma sintering at 800°C with a pressure of 70 MPa for 5min in Ar atmosphere. The hardness and elastic modulus of sintered Cu-CNT nanocomposites are found to be 1.8±.04 GPa and 112±.07 GPa, respectively. Furthermore uniform dispersion of CNTs in Cu matrix was observed as revealed by the microstructural analysis.
