Bayan Obo niobium deposit is the most abundant niobium reserve of China. In order to realize the utilization of the low grade Ti-Nb bearing iron concentrate, The ‘niobium bearing iron concentrate selective reduction by coal-iron and slag fast melting separation-niobium bearing mineral phase crystallization-niobium secondary enrichment’ new flow sheet has been proposed by the authors. The optimal reduction condition ore/coal composite pellet was at the temperature of 1100℃ for 20min and with the basicity of 1.0. The optimal melting separation temperature was 1400℃ of prereduced pellet. The Nb-containing crystalline phase in the separated Nb-rich slag crystallized well after slow cooling although the Nb2O5 grade was not so high due to the addition of CaO. The Nb2O5 mainly combined with TiO2 and CaO forming large size crystal with the grain size of bigger than 30μm. The well crystallized Nb-rich slag can be further enriched by the floatation of Nb-containing crystalline phase.
