||ChemSheet as a Simulation Platform for Pyrometallurgical Processes

ChemSheet is a thermodynamic add-in to Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Its unique constrained Gibbs free energy method allows for using dynamic constraints and reaction rates in yet fully consistent multiphase thermodynamic modeling. Industrial applications of ChemSheet include scale-up of titania pigment production, simulation of Waelz kilns for resource-efficient zinc recycling and spreadsheet expert system for the design of superheaters in mixed and biofuel boilers. Recent pyrometallurgical ChemSheet models encompass Cu-flash smelting and simulation coupled with on-line process control of Xstrata Nickel’s Sudbury Cu-Ni smelting plant. The on-line model integrates thermochemistry of the roasters and electric furnace with predictions of important process parameters such as sulphur elimination in the fluid-bed roasters, matte grade, iron metallisation, slag losses and the iron to silica ratio in the slag. Connected to a PI_server the thermodynamic model is used to assist operators to define addition rates of coke, flux and air for different feed scenarios.
