Complex oxide thin films have attracted great research interests owing to their novel and versatile physical properties including superconductivity, ferroelectrics, ferromagnet, multiferroics, and many others. Recently a class of novel nanocomposites, epitaxial vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN), has been shown to provide strong vertical interface coupling and allow highly strained thin films. Pulsed laser deposition is one of the most successful techniques for the growth of such high quality epitaxial VAN thin films. In parallel epitaxial metal films have been shown to have high mechanical strength and advanced physical properties. In this talk, examples are given for the microstructure and unique properties of these VAN and epitaxial metallic systems. Thin film epitaxy schemes are extended from single phase to multiphase epitaxy and from the lateral interface epitaxy to both lateral and vertical epitaxy.
