||Optimization of Exothermic Riser Sleeve Design Parameters

Exothermic riser sleeves are important tools to increase solidification duration particularly on iron-steel casting. Increased time to solidus is resulted in improved quality casting products by minimizing cavities. Therefore, they significantly reduce process costs. Exothermic riser sleeves can keep the heat up to 30-35% and, they can increase the duration to solidus up to nearly 50% over unsleeved risers. They are a mixture of metallothermic-based exothermic and insulating materials and, they are manufactured in different sizes and shapes. Various suppliers produce those sleeves in different compositions. However, it is a necessity to be clearly understood their themochemical and thermophysical properties by designers. In the present study, it was aimed to detemine the experimental parametres of selected exothermic sleeves such as reaction duration, flammability and temperature change etc. The results were compared with thermodynamical simulations which were received by using the contents and the corresponding thermophysical properties of used exothermic sleeves.
